Chin up, Princess, or the crown will slip.
A theme park princess must put her life back together after her happily ever after falls apart in this contemporary YA romance from Karole Cozzo, author of How to Keep Rolling After a Fall and How to Say I Love You Out Loud.
Everything was supposed to be perfect. Alyssa has a job she loves, working as Cinderella at her favorite theme park; a fantastic group of friends; and a boyfriend who will no longer be long distance. But as the summer progresses, her prince becomes less charming and more distant, and Alyssa’s perfect summer falls apart.
Forced to acknowledge that life is not always a fairy tale, Alyssa starts working to pull her herself back together. Fortunately, she doesn’t have to do it alone. With her friend Miller’s support, she’s determined to prove that she’s more than just a pretty princess. And with his help, maybe she’s finally ready for something better than dreams. Maybe she’s ready for something real.
Thank you so much to Swoon Reads and Raincoast Publishing for sending an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
So, being the huge Disney nerd that I am, I just HAD to review this book. Everything about this book screamed READ ME CARLY!
Starting off, we meet Alyssa, who plays (and lives) the life of Cinderella in a theme park. Alyssa lives the life of the stereotypical princess, but she is so much more. Sure she plans her future wedding using Pinterest (but I mean, who doesn’t?) and has the perfect boyfriend, but nothing is ever perfect in life. Alyssa presents the struggles it takes to maintain the ‘princess’ look and realizes that although boyfriends come and go, they are nothing compared to the best friends that you have.
One of my favourite parts was when Alyssa began to do more than just run on the treadmill at the gym, which shows how her character is changing for the better.
“There are endless sequences of crunches and push-ups, and something really, really god-awful called a burpee.”
If this is not the most relatable thing ever, then heck, I don’t know what is. I’m pretty sure we have all had a low point in our life in which we thought it could not get any better, but for Alyssa, it is the people around her that were able to help lift her out of a hole and make her who she was before.
This story proves that you provide your own sparkle. Now one is able to control you, you are your own person.
“We don’t get to write our own happily ever afters. Life takes care of that for us. And sometimes, from the very first page, you can tell your next chapter is going to be even better than anything you imagined in your wildest dream.”
